• A documentary photo essay about some of the men and women living and battling the ravaging and horrific effects of AIDS, at the Bailey-Boushay House, an AIDS Hospice, in Seattle, WA., from June 1992 to April 1995.

Opened in June 1992, B.B.H. was developed by AIDS Housing of Washington as the first new nursing care residence and day health program in America for HIV/AIDS patients.

Our purposes were to humanize AIDS, to compel the viewer to say "this could be me," and to educate those who did not see the disease and its victims face to face; and, to show the dignity and loving care that the B.B.H. community - the staff, volunteers, and families - provided to people living with AIDS in their final stages of life. "It provides a respectful place for a major passage in life," said Administrator Christine Hurley.

It gave us immense satisfaction that the portraits gave many of the clients a new sense of self esteem as they still felt worthy and important to be photographed, and that they trusted us to tell their story and share it.
• We photographed the ‘San Francisco Gay Parade’ from 1984–1990, and recognized that given our skills and interests in telling a story thru a documentary photo essay, we could and should document the gay community fighting for its civil rights, for equality, for understanding and awareness, and for coming together as a community - and this became our project's focus.

We were after three objectives -- to create a photo essay that would capture the love and commitment that we observed again and again by couples and by the community organizations; to create a moving and heartfelt portrait of the gay community through this annual parade; and to create a historical archive of what it was like when gays and lesbians had the courage to march peacefully on Market Street and in the Castro District, demanding their equal rights.
• When our older son Bryce started playing T-Ball, we started to photograph him and all the teams he played on up thru the Majors Division when he was 12. Very soon during his first year it became a project not only about him for us, but about what it's like for young boys to play in Little League -- what it may feel like, their intense competition, the friendships they make, and the heartaches they go thru.

When our younger son Micah played for a couple of seasons, we photographed him and his teams as well.

This was a fun project produced over many hot Saturday afternoons, early Sunday mornings, and freezing April nights in our town of Alameda, and it only helped that we have a great interest in American Culture, Traditions, and Lifestyles.
