• Driving up the gravel driveway to my grandmother Ella May Rae’s house, light filtered through the tunnel of trees to reveal what had become an island of tranquility - an entrance to this magical and mystical little paradise my grandparents and family created with Ella living there for over 60 years. The timelessness of Ella’s world was enlivened by her spirit, and by years of living in one place. “I’ve got nothing to brag about, it’s ordinary everyday things, I’ve just raised five kids,” she said. “It was real country,” she recalled with a sparkle. “We had 5 acres. We had ducks, chickens, sheep, and Buttercup, a cow. We had a farm, that’s what it was. They are good memories.”

When I was little I thought that I was so special because I was a part of this family. I remember coming up with my family every summer and looking forward to the old house with no sidewalks, the outdoor mailbox with a red flag, the garden in the backyard, and the huge family campouts in the orchard when it was really beautiful at night. At the house I found the old, red scooter I used to play with as a child, and the sketch I gave to Ella when I was a first grader. I remember being so excited at seeing my drawing up on her wall, as that was one of my early goals.

The first thing you noticed about Ella, was her laughter and twinkling eyes. That was her trademark, what people remembered about her – of how she was a good spirit, a ‘good fairy.’ She had a wonderful spirit of living, a person in love with life. An afternoon often just faded away as I spent hours with her chitchatting, listening to her stories from the past, talking about the latest news developments, and family gossip. One night I visited and got to talking about old nursery rhymes. “The thing about old rhymes is you never see them anymore,” Ella laughed with regret. She then quickly recited the ‘Bunny Rabbit rhyme, something I hadn’t heard in around 20 years.

• We’ve been together for over 35 years expressing as social commentary our observations and interpretations of what we’ve experienced and felt with photographs and stories about America. Many of these photographs were taken in the 1980’s and 1990’s, and we think that they reveal an America many people in some parts of the USA yearn for today which has contributed to dividing the country - a country of seemingly simpler times, of opposing values and cultures, and of inequalities - such as when there was much less support for LGBTQ people who were fighting for their rights, for women who were fighting more than today for their place at the work place and out of their traditional roles in the home, social and political events that gave access to the upper class and the wealthy, and African Americans who were as they still are today fighting for their voice, their rights, and their rightful place in society. These are images of what we have witnessed in our communities, with our families and friends, and through our observations of daily life in work, leisure, and family life with our bias and political views. We’ve been working together for over 30 years expressing our observations and interpretations of what we’ve experienced and felt with our photographs about America.
