Photos of the 'San Francisco Gay & Lesbian Freedom Day Parade: 1984-1990'

We photographed the ‘San Francisco Gay Parade’ from 1984–1990, and recognized that given our skills and interests in telling a story thru a documentary photo essay, we could and should document the gay community fighting for its civil rights, for equality, for understanding and awareness, and for coming together as a community - and this became our project's focus.

We were after three objectives -- to create a photo essay that would capture the love and commitment that we observed again and again by couples and by the community organizations; to create a moving and heartfelt portrait of the gay community through this annual parade; and to create a historical archive of what it was like when gays and lesbians had the courage to march peacefully on Market Street and in the Castro District, demanding their equal rights.
